To Be Grateful…

I always say thank you but I’m not always grateful.

The truth is that being grateful doesn’t always come naturally. Often gratitude comes as a result of tragedy, leading to a shift in perspective.

My life is fine. I am healthy, my family are healthy, and I always have a home and people who love me to fall back on. But I often forget exactly what this means.

Sometimes I need something to kick me into gear and make me realise just how lucky I really am. So today I am grateful for Nina Simone and for the ‘shuffle’ feature on my music player for making me listen to its powerful lyrics, and to start saying that my life isn’t just ‘fine’ it’s ‘great’!

Life itself is worthy of gratitude, isn’t it? How remarkable it is that we have a window on this wonderful world! Loved the song.

Wow, I love your honesty here. You’re absolutely right–we often forget how fortunate we really are, especially when we get caught up complaining about petty things. Great post.

P.S. Sorry I don’t know how to rate. It shows 2.2, but I’d give it a “5″ if I only knew how!

Howdy, from another Nina Simone fan.

That’s very true! And ah isn’t music something to be grateful about? I think from early on it is probably what I’ve felt more grateful too, which on the other hand makes me ungrateful when it comes to other things. lol

    Hi,
Music does cheer me up, when I am down. I’m grateful to be alive. Life is beautiful! We are only as happy as we make it. Live your life to the fullest, we are not promised tomorrow. Nice post & take care! :-)

Yes, it is amazing how beautiful and powerful music can be uplifting. Unfortunately you are right about it taking a bit of a bad time to make one feel grateful. Will try to be more grateful.

    Penny,
Funnily enough I downloaded this very video from You Tube last week and have listened to it every day since.
What a great voice and an interesting woman who wasn’t afraid to be herself regardless of anyone’s opinions of her.
    Thank you,
    Lucinda.

Exactly, there’s always something to complain about, even if everythings really perfectly fine: “My wallet’s too small for my fifties, and my diamond shoes are too tight!”

even though the lyrics are simple, it has a very powerful meaning…
most people complain about how difficult life is, we forget that even through difficulties and the things that we lack, life is something that we should always be grateful for.
thanks for sharing this video. this actually made me curious about nina simone. the name is so familiar and the kind of music she plays is something that I really like…

Excellent post, we all have so much to be grateful for but so often take it for granted. Often not really appreciating it until maybe it is gone.

  22. ImitationAngel says —

I agree with Bill on this one. I for one have been guilty of taking things for granted. Now I try to appreciate many of the things that surround me on a daily basis (even when I don’t want to).

  23. Kim says —

Great song. We do get so busy so much of the time that we can forget how many things we need to appreciate each and every day. Thanks and have a great holiday season!

Blessings! I would like to pass on an award I created for those who share the light! Thank you for inspiring me, and helping me on my journey. Love, light, and blessings. Love, Kimmy
