The Difference the Sun Can Make

Yesterday when I woke up and opened the curtains I noticed one thing: the sun was shining in a blue sky.

What a difference the sun can make to our mood. Instantly I felt things were looking up. I realised the grey wasn’t going to last forever, I remembered what it’s like to appreciate a beautiful day.

The weather is warmer too. A few degrees makes a huge difference when it’s been as cold as it has lately.

Though I live in a small flat, it feels bigger thanks to a gorgeous south-facing window. And, when the sun shines, it fills the whole room. My desk is in that window, making me warm from the sun when I sit at my computer. In fact, I’m so grateful for that window that lets me watch the birds in the trees, the squirrels sitting at the top of telegraph poles, and the postman posting his letters.

And a thought crossed my mind: isn’t it odd that with so much technology, so many things that keep us locked in our own little world, that the sun can make such a huge difference to our mood?

You’re absolutely right, the way it affects us is immense. Personally, I can feel every ray of sunlight – or a lack thereof – having huge impacts on my mood. Sometimes I think I must have some form of a bipolar disordar, but maybe it would just help to move somewhere sunny :D (Actually that isn’t entirely true – I still did have my down times during the 4 months in Spain, but anyhow the overall difference is huge)

Bitter – I have heard that SAD (seasonal affective disorder) is related to things like bipolar. I have really felt it hard this winter, I have never actually felt it so strongly in the past. Though I guess it’s just the winter blues. Maybe it is a sign you should live somewhere sunny! I don’t know what you’re doing in the UK then… lol ;)

I was just thinking about this too, it’s the first sunny day after a couple of weeks of snowy gloom, and I really do feel better and more positive because of it!

Vixel – Yeah it’s been so gloomy! Gloomy again today, but at least that sunny day really made a change. I was starting to forget what a sunny day looked like!

Glad that the sun was shining for you the other day. It certainly would be good to have a sunnier and warmer day especially in winter. Technology can help us in many areas of our lives everyday but it can never provide the warmth nature provides us through the sun.

BK – you’re so right, nothing can make up for that natural light. Winter is really dragging on, I’m so thankful for the sunny days!

It’s such an interesting thing that happens, even if you KNOW and tell yourself that the grey won’t last forever – it isn’t until the sun comes shining out that you actually start to feel the smile creep back onto your face.

I’ve been taking Vitamin D pills to try and help, and they do… a little. hehe

fragile – It’s true, we need the actual light and warmth to make a difference. I really have to get me some of this Vitamin D! The weather still is appalling here, about one day of sun a week.
